Sovereign "Dimension of Torment" pic discBlack metal has always walked a thin line between the primitive and sophisticated, simplicity and complexity (of both musicianship and ideology), of regression and progression. Brazil's Sovereign is most definitely an identity at war with itself. Masterminded by sole member, Rudolf the Proud, Dimension of torment is a raucous, alcohol soaked dose of stripped down and raw black metal at it's finest.
Driving, simplistic drumming and strained, hate filled vocals are pushed to the front of the mix complimented by distorted, simplistic rhythm guitars in the vein of Ildjarn. Here is where the duality of Sovereign's sound comes in. Lurking just below the surface, almost out of audible reach are haunting and melodic guitar leads that show a high level of musicianship and creativity. All of these pieces tie together to create something textural and all consuming, leading the listener into alternate states if reflecting the proper state of mind.
There is also something to be said for the unique and evocotive aesthetic of Sovereign. In the only image of him I can find Rudolf the Proud is short haired and mustasche clad, weilding a pitchfork. Although lyrics are not included songs seem to run the gamut of subject matter from alcohol, Satan, and even the cosmos. RECOMMENDED TO THE HIGHEST DEGREE!

FURDIDURKE - s/t cassette
Furdiduke exists as a mysterious entity. In fact the only information I can collect on this elusive beast is that they hail from the state of Washington. Their sense of mystique is appropriate as it mirrors the obscurity of their sound. Note must be made that the band does not notate song titles or distinguish any differentiation between tracks other than: "Side A: Demo songs recorded April 2006 live in Black House, Side B: Fall 2005 Rehearsals recorded live in Black House." This is not to say there is no variation in sound. In fact quite the opposite, upon listening we are rewarded with everything from punkish black metal to more atmosphic, haunting passages and mid paced dirges.
While Furdidurke could be described as relatively simplistic, raw black metal there is a lot that distiguishes them from other similarly described acts. Despide the harsh nature of these recordings there is a nearly constant supply of somewhat odd guitar melodies that add to the uniqueness of the music. In fact the more I listen to this tape, the more I am overwhelmed by how melodic it is. It is refreshing that these compositions are stripped down, no keyboards, no electronics, no drum machine - as it should be.
Note must be made of the recording, RAW as fuck with no compromise, no concern for the discerning ear. These compositions are for those interested in the real energy and feeling. Though I do feel more of an affinity for the rehearsal tracks than the demo's as the drums come through louder which is more abrasive to my ears!
Those looking for a real american black metal band that recalls the energy and obscurity of the early days while creating a raw, simplistic sound all their own are urged to seek this out. True american black metal in it's rare form!
